When it comes to your television, figuring out how best to incorporate it into the living space can be challenging. Should it be seen or concealed? While televisions have gotten slimmer, they can still be tricky to design around. “Deciding where to place a television is a big issue when it comes to decorating a room,” says Chicago-based designer
. “It becomes even more complicated when the same room has a fireplace, which already acts as a focal point.” The function of the room and whether it’s a formal or casual space will drive the decision to keep a
on display or out of sight. Frequency of use is also a strong consideration: Occasional viewers can opt for clever hiding spots, while frequent binge-watchers may give their sets a prime location in open view. Follow Stringer’s simple guidelines to solve this modern design challenge.
Consider the size of the room. “Generally, the closer you are to the screen, the lower and smaller it should be,” advises Stringer. This TV is mounted next to a fireplace mantel on a rotating panel that swivels out of sight.
If the TV occupies a bedroom or a formal space, or is watched infrequently, it’s best to conceal it. In this bedroom, two flat screens are mounted back-to-back inside the antique-looking trunk at the foot of the bed. “When raised, one TV faces the bed while the other set faces the sitting area,” says Stringer.
“For wall-mounted TVs, having the wall a deeper tone either in finish or
color will minimize contrast with the screen,” says Stringer. Here, a pocket behind the fireplace masonry was created for a TV to slide out on a large panel.
